How to create a survey project
Set up your first project in EngageRocket, the first step before building any survey.
Every survey in EngageRocket lives inside a project. Before you can create a survey, you need to set up a project first. This article walks you through creating a project and choosing the right project type for your needs.
💡 Before you begin: Make sure you have read Understanding the Entity, Project and Survey structure to understand the difference between One-off, Frequency, and Milestones project types. Choosing the right type upfront will save you from having to start over.
Creating your project
- Navigate to the Survey Projects section from the top navigation bar.
- Click '+Create new project'.
- Enter a project name. Choose something clear and descriptive — for example, 'Employee Engagement 2025' or 'Onboarding Pulse Q3'. This name will appear on your dashboard so make it easy to identify.
- Decide if this is a test project. If you are using this project for testing purposes only, tick the test project checkbox. Data from test projects is excluded from benchmarking reports. Leave this unticked for live surveys.
- Select your project type — One-off, Frequency, or Milestones. See the details below for each option.
- Complete any additional settings based on the project type you selected, then click 'Create project'.
You will be taken to the project page where you can now create your first survey.
Additional settings by project type

1. One-off
No additional settings required. Click 'Create project' and you are done.
2. Frequency
Set your recurrence schedule, choose how often the survey repeats (e.g. every 1, 2, or 3 weeks or months) and on which days. You can also set an optional end date to automatically stop the recurring survey.

3. Milestones
Choose the date attribute (e.g. Start Date) that will trigger the survey automatically. Then use the 'Add Milestone' button to set up your milestone timing, for example, 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days after the employee's start date.

⚠️ Please note: The project name and type cannot be changed after the project has been created. Double-check your settings before clicking 'Create project'.
Something not working?
- I selected the wrong project type — Project types cannot be changed after creation. Delete the project and create a new one with the correct type. If surveys have already been launched inside the project, contact support before deleting.
- I marked the project as a test by mistake — The test project flag cannot be removed after creation. Delete the project and create a new one without the test flag.
- My Milestone project is not triggering surveys — Each employee must have a Start Date recorded in the Employee List for milestone surveys to schedule automatically. Check that the relevant employees have this field populated.
