Survey Setup – Questionnaire FAQ

A troubleshooting guide for building, customising, and reviewing your survey questionnaire

Not sure how to build your survey questionnaire or which question type to use? This guide addresses the most common questions around setting up questions, customising your survey, adding translations, and reviewing before launch.

Browse the questions below to find the answers you need and get your survey questionnaire ready with confidence.

Creating a Survey

Questions Answer
Where do I start to create a new survey? Go to your Survey Project page and click "+ Create New Survey." This will allow you to define key parameters including the survey name, type, and timeline to begin collecting data effectively.
What is the difference between a Project and a Survey? A Project is a folder that holds multiple related surveys. A Survey is the actual data collection within a project where responses from participants are gathered and analyzed.

Questions & Question Library

Questions Answer
Can I use pre-built questions instead of writing my own? Yes. When setting up your questionnaire, you can add questions directly from EngageRocket's question library templates. If you prefer to use your own questions, click "I have my own questions." You can also access the library later by clicking the "Templates and Library" button.
What question types are available in EngageRocket? There are six question types available: Rating Scale, eNPS, Yes/No, Single Choice, Multiple Choice, and Open-Ended. Each serves a different purpose depending on the type of feedback you want to collect.
What is a Rating Scale question and how does it work? A Rating Scale question gathers feedback on a defined scale (e.g., 1–5). You can customise the labels and value descriptions such as "Strongly Disagree" to "Strongly Agree." Note: As of August 2025, the same Rating Scale options apply to all Rating Scale questions in the survey. Changing the options for one question will affect all other Rating Scale questions as well.
What is an eNPS question? The Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) question measures employee loyalty and advocacy by asking how likely employees are to recommend the organisation as a place to work on a scale of 0–10. It is best followed by an open-ended question to capture the reason behind the score.
When should I use a Yes/No question? Use Yes/No questions for clear, binary queries where nuance is not required, such as factual or eligibility-type questions. The answers are easy to quantify and analyze.
What is the difference between Single Choice and Multiple Choice questions? Single Choice allows respondents to select only one answer from a list of mutually exclusive options. Multiple Choice allows respondents to select one or more answers, with options to set minimum and maximum selection limits and include an "Other" option for open-ended responses.
When should I use an Open-Ended question? Use Open-Ended questions sparingly to avoid survey fatigue. They are best placed after a related rating question to gather qualitative context behind a score. This helps make employees feel heard and provides actionable insight for your data.

Survey Customisation

Questions Answer
Can I add my company logo to the survey? Yes. On the Questionnaire page, go to the right-hand panel and select "Logo in Survey Header." You can upload your logo via URL or a base64-encoded string and adjust the width, height, and fit settings.
Can I customise the Welcome and Thank You messages? Yes. On the right-hand panel of the Questionnaire page, you can edit the Survey Name, Welcome Message, and Thank You Message under the "General" and "Survey Complete" sections. A well-crafted Thank You message helps reinforce that employee feedback is valued and can encourage participation in future surveys.
What is Conditional Logic and how do I use it? Conditional Logic allows you to show or hide questions based on a respondent's previous answers or employee segment. You can also make questions required based on specific conditions. This personalises the survey flow and ensures only relevant questions are shown to each respondent.

Translations

Questions Answer
Can I offer the survey in multiple languages? Yes. On the Translations tab (1.2 Translations), you can select multiple languages from the right-hand panel. Available languages include Bahasa Indonesia, Japanese, Korean, Bahasa Melayu, Tamil, Thai, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Khmer, Burmese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese, among others.
Do I need to manually translate all questions? No. Questions from the EngageRocket library are automatically translated. However, you will need to manually enter translations for any custom content, including the Survey Title, Thank You Message, and any custom questions you have written yourself.
My translations are not appearing or are missing for some questions. Why?

There are two common reasons for this:

  • First, if the questions are custom-written (not from the EngageRocket library), translations will not be added automatically and must be entered manually for each selected language.

  • Second, if a language was previously removed from the language selection list, the system will have shown a confirmation message warning that all translation strings for that language would be deleted. If confirmed, all translations for that language are permanently removed. To restore them, you will need to re-add the language from the right-hand panel and manually re-enter all translations for your custom content.

Tagging Dimensions & Overall Score

Questions Answer
What are Dimensions and why should I tag them? Dimensions are categories that group questions of a similar theme. By tagging your questions with dimensions, the dashboard can automatically analyze your results by both Dimensions and Questions, making it easier to identify trends across specific areas.
Can I set up an Overall Score for my survey? Yes. On the "Tag Dimensions & Set Up Overall Score" page, you can enable an Overall Score that computes a combined score across all rating questions. Note that this feature applies to Rating Scale questions only.

Previewing Your Survey

Questions Answer
How do I preview my survey before it goes live? Click the "Preview Survey" button at the top right of the Questionnaire page. This lets you see and interact with the survey exactly as your employees will, allowing you to check for errors before launch.
What should I check during the survey preview? Use the preview to review all questions for clarity, spelling, and grammar, check the overall flow and user experience from start to finish, and verify that any conditional logic you have set up is working as expected.
Can I share the survey preview with other stakeholders? Yes. On the Preview page, click "Share Preview Link" to share the survey preview with other key stakeholders for review before the survey goes live.
