Why is it a 5, not 4 or 6 or 7...
There has been considerable debate over the optimal scale points used when measuring attitudes and opinions. EngageRocket uses a 5-point Likert scale, with only the endpoints labeled "Strongly Agree" and "Strongly Disagree".
WHY A 5-POINT SCALE?
Increase response rate and response quality Research has shown that the 5-point scale is efficient and reduces respondents’ “frustration level” (Babakus and Mangold 1992). It is readily comprehensible to respondents and enables them to express their views as the scale appears to be less confusing.
Greater efficiency While having more scale points may offer more information (e.g. 7 or 10-point scales), the top two scale points are often collapsed during analysis. There have been meaningful differences between the "4" and "5" ratings on a 5-point scale making it an efficient scale to use in drawing the line between respondents.
Presences of a midpoint To allow for a clear "neutral" response, eliminating the effect of forced choice on choice.
A five-point Likert scale ranging from 'strongly agree' to 'strongly disagree' was employed as it has been most recommended by the researchers that it would reduce the frustration level of patient respondents and increase response rate and response quality. ODD vs. EVEN NUMBER OF POINTS
Why not a 6-point scale? The inclusion of a neutral point eliminates the effect of forced choice where a respondent is "forced" to choose a side despite being indifferent. This will potentially skew results and in the absence of empirical research to conclusively argue that the odd-number scale may be vulnerable to response biases in some cultures, EngageRocket maintains the position that the 5-point scale is an effective measurement for opinions.
